21st Century Skill: Self-Directional Skills
The Assignment and Why I Chose It:
In Mrs. Wilson's biology class in the first quarter student were given seeds and later instructed to germinate them in different environments. Student were given 6 corn seeds and 6 mung beans. Student first had to leave the seeds in water overnight. Then students had to place the seeds into plastic bags and log the growth of the seeds everyday for two weeks. Students then had to analyze their findings, make inferences, and record what they would have different if they did the experiment again. I chose to review this assignment because it took a lot of time and showcased Self-Directional Skills well. How I used Self-Directional Skills:
Students had to record the seed growth everyday and track how well the seeds were doing. Doing this everyday, for two weeks took a good bit of Self-Directional Skills. Not only did students have to focus on the assignment for a while but we also had to make observations and had to handle our time wisely. It takes a lot of Self-Directional Skills to be able to record the seed's growth every single day for two whole weeks. It might not seem like a lot of time, but for me it took control to do this. This assignment also took Self-Directional to start and end the experiment on time. Since not everybody placed their seed in water on the day we were supposed to. |

Strengths and Current Growth:
Some strengths in this assignment, to me, were starting the experiment on time and logging the seed growth almost everyday. I was also able to follow the directions of the experiment. Because of this most of the seeds survived through the two weeks. Additionally some seeds needed to be in a dark place, and some needed to be in full sunlight for the experiment to work. I was proud that I found these places in my house and the experiment went smoothly overall.

Week Points and New Growth:
Although the experiment went well there are still some this I could've improved and wold do differently in the future. For example, I logged the seed growth almost everyday. But some days I forgot to log the seed's growth so I estimated their growth instead. I also forgot to spray the seeds in the shade with water. If I were to do this experiment again I would make sure to log the seed growth every single day, and follow every instruction. This is also a way that I can improve on my Self-Directional Skills, I can learn how to focus better and set small achievable goals for future growth in this skill.
