Work Sample: Atomic Model Project
Description of Work/Assignment: For this project students had to choose an atom from the periodic table and make a 3-D model of that atom using multiple materials. The students also had to be creative and make a unique model that showed the different parts of the atom. For my project, I chose the element Argon and made a 3-D standing model. Which 21st-century skill do you feel this assignment addresses and why? Although this was a science based project I feel that 21st century skill best used for this project was financial, economic, and business literacy. For this project I had to make a budget for myself and stick to that budget. I needed a lot of high quality materials in order for the project to be well made and I had to manage the financial aspect of the project both inside and outside of school. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? From this project, I am most proud of the final product, and the information sheet on the final product. The final product was nice, neat and held together nicely. I am especially proud of my information sheet though. The sheet had all of the best information about the Argon atom and was a nice addition to the overall project. How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st-century skill with this assignment? For the project, I basically just got to use this 21sst-century skill outside of school. I had to manage the budget for this project and buy the materials, so remembering that I was on a budget and doing it outside of school helped to cement the foundation of this skill. I'm pretty good at managing my money, and learning about this skill from school has helped in my personal life. What was the most difficult thing about completing this assignment? The most difficult thing about this project was staying on budget and completing it in a timely manner. The overall cost of the project was a little out of my budget, so I had to improvise in order to stay inside the budget of the project. Making compromises was a little tricky, but it helped to advance my skills in financial literacy. This project was also pretty quick, so I had to move fast and stay within the limits of time. How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? If I were to do this project again, I'd probably spend less money. At the moment, the cost of the materials seemed reasonable and beneficial. But looking back, I don't think I needed to spend as much money as I did. How does this relate to what you have done in the past? I've had to buy materials for project before, both in and out of school, so I was just repeating that for a different project. How can you apply this to future learning? I can learn to manage money better, and I can remember that projects for school shouldn't be costly if done right. I will also need to use this skill for my junior and senior projects, so I can apply this project for those projects as well. |
