Work Sample: Beach Clean Up For Senior Project
For this activity, we didn't do a specific project or assignment. Instead students got out onto the field and helped both the environment and a KCS senior. For the activity students from the Period 1 Community Engagement class went to Sugar Beach and picked up trash for the class period. Students could decide whether or not they wanted to come to the clean-up or if they wanted to stay on campus. Students helped ti pick up garbage in order to help our local community and to help a senior complete her project. The senior was making a sculpture out of trash for her final project and needed help. The Community Engagement class took vans to the beach and split into groups of 4-5 to collect trash. At the end of the activity the class took a group shot to show how much trash was collected, and we did some verbal reflections in the next class. From this activity I most enjoyed caring for our local wildlife and hanging out with my peers while doing it. During the activity we got to choose our groups in order to collect trash. I chose to be in a group with Georgia, Kwanza, and Dylan. They are all part of my Community engagement class. I enjoyed working with this group effectively and we also had fun during the activity, which was a bonus. By the end I was most proud of the fact that we got to help a senior and we got to help Sugar beach stay clean. By the end of this activity we collected a fair amount of trash as a group and got to learn more about Sugar beach and the kind of trash that gathers there most. The most difficult part about the activity was finding a group that would work well. WE had to choose groups keeping in mind that we'd have to work efficiently during the class period. We also had to keep in mind that we would have to pick up trash with people and work together in order to do that. Georgia and I often work well together during class activities, so that was a no-brainer. We also decided to work with Kwanza and Dylan because they work well in a group and were easy to get along with. Another difficult part about the activity was the activity itself, picking up trash. We had to pick up trash at the beach at 8:30 in the morning with the Kihei sun, so that part wasn't the most fun. But we got through it and were able to do a good job for the activity. If I was going to do this activity again, I would have been more prepared on the way I dressed. That day in particular I kind of forgot that we were going off campus and I decided to wear a hoodie, jeans, and Doc Martens. So it was fine, but I was still a bit uncomfortable while doing the activity. So the next time we go out into the field, I would set a reminder for myself and dress more comfortably depending on the activity. I've done beach clean ups and similar volunteer activities in the past so I was able to apply some of that experience into this activity. I wasn't familiar with Sugar beach though since I had never done a clean up there before. During the activity I was able to get more familiar with Sugar beach and the kind of wildlife and pollution that is there. I could apply what I learned during this activity to future volunteer opportunities and future class outings. 21st Century Skill: Civil Literacy and Engagement For this activity we learned more about Sugar beach and Kealia pond. We also went into our community in order to help our local environment and our KCS senior. I chose to talk about this activity specifically because I feel that is represented this 21st century skill well. Learning about and engaging with our community can be applied to future learning at KCS and real world learning as well. We can apply this knowledge and this skill in our daily lives and our school lives because this activity laid down some of the ground work for this skill. |
