Week Five Forum
Cultural Anthropology With Dr. Melissa Kirkendall
Description of Work/Assignment:
Students had to read Chapter 5 from their textbook and answer questions based on topics from the chapter. Students had to watch a documentary and read a short article to answer the questions. This assignment was pretty straightforward, I liked answering the questions, and I think I did pretty well on this assignment. During week five, we studied foraging societies and how traditional ecological practices compare to modern ones.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
For this assignment, the 21st-century skill of information skills fits best. The assignment addressed information skills because students had to use multiple forms of media in technology to learn about the topic and complete the assignment. Since this was a college-level assignment, it was important to use all the informational resources given to answer the questions well.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
Since this was a writing assignment, there wasn’t a lot to view for the final product. That being said, I was most proud of my answer to the second question. I formulated a good response using the resources I was provided and got good feedback from the instructor on the assignment. I feel that my answer to the second question was formulated well and answered the question thoroughly.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I had to use different forms of media in technology in order to complete the assignment, which perfectly demonstrates information skills. I was able to improve this skill on a more subtle level. I’ve used this skill in the past, but using the skill at a college level is an improvement from using information skills in high school.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult thing about completing this task was coming up with a clear and thoughtful response to the second question. At first, I didn’t have a problem writing out my answer, but it got more difficult as I wanted my answer to be more profound. The second question warranted a lot of compassion for me, so I wanted to answer the best I could while still including my opinion and references from the text and media I used.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I were to start over or do this assignment again, I would probably write more to answer the questions in more depth. I answered the questions well and went into a lot of detail on some things, but I could’ve included more and written more about topics that I quickly brushed over for the assignment.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
In the past, I’ve learned a little about cultures that use traditional ecological practices, but I never learned about them in detail or from an anthropological viewpoint. The assignment relates to what I’ve learned about information skills and using different forms of media in order to complete an assignment. Overall though, I mostly learned from this assignment and was able to understand what I was learning.
How can you apply this to future learning?
From this assignment, I can use information skills in the future. In the future, I can see myself using the process of learning and doing the assignment rather than using the content I learned from the assignment. Because of the assignment, I have a more in-depth understanding of foraging societies, which is valuable knowledge. I think I’ll use the process of research and how I answered the questions more in the future.
