Timed Writing Essay: Humanities 12, Quarter 2
- Description of Assignment / Work:
In my humanities class, we do a timed writing exercise every quarter. During our long period, usually on a Tuesday, we write an argumentative essay in class based on a topic we’re learning in class. This quarter, the topic of the timed writing essay was AI and whether it will be more beneficial or harmful in the future. For the essay, we do a bit of research the day prior and then get the essay prompt and write the essay during class. My claim for the essay was that AI will ultimately be more beneficial than harmful in the future. - What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
From this assignment, I am most proud that I was able to finish the task and complete my essay in the allotted time. I struggle with time management and follow-through, so I am forced to write an entire essay in an hour. - What was most difficult about completing this task?
It was difficult to complete my essay and address everything that I wanted to. I wanted to make a lot of points regarding the essay topic, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to, so I was proud that I was able to do that. - How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could improve this or do it again, I would probably read over my essay and edit it. I didn’t do that this time because I didn’t have enough time to do so, but next time I would read it over and make sure I didn’t make any large errors. - How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? How can you apply this to future learning?
I’ve had to write argumentative essays in the past, and this has shown me that I am capable of writing a full essay in a short amount of time. So, I hope to carry that into the future when I have more time to write a full and thought-out essay. - Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st-century Century Skill with this assignment?
I think the 21st Century Skill that was addressed in this assignment was self-direction. I really had to stay focused and engaged on the task to the entire class in order to complete it and do it well. It’s easy to get distracted, especially for me, so it was good that I was able to monitor my actions and focus on this assignment.
