Work Sample: Chemistry Comic Strip Project
Students were expected to make a comic strip in order to illustrate the differences between chemical and physical changes. The comic strip had to be more than 10 panels and had certain expectations in order to get a good grade. The comic includes two examples of physical changes and two examples of chemical changes. The comic had to be neat and organized in order to properly show that the students understood the concepts and the differences between physical and chemical changes. Students did this project in the first quarter of school and had to use both the class time and time at home wisely. In this project I was most proud of my creativity and the story line of my comic. When making the comic students had to be creative and come up with an original story to properly show the differences between physical and chemical changes. I was especially proud of my story because I thought it was well-rounded and creative. From this project I was also proud of the amount of time and effort I put into the project. I spent a good amount of time making sure that the final result was good and well thought out. The most difficult part about doing this project was coming up with the story. That is one of the reason's that I was proud of the story line. I was stumped on coming up with a good story that would show my knowledge of the subject matters. This was what I had the most trouble with and it took up a lot of the class time that we got to work on the project. I tried other ideas before deciding on my final story and that took up additional time as well. On a smaller note, since coming up with the story took a lot of time I also had to manage my remaining amount of time wisely. If I were to do this project again I would probably try to manage my time better. I came up with a good story in the end, but it took a lot of time and I was indecisive when thinking of ideas in the first place. When I had a little bit of time left I kind of rushed the rest of the project because I had spent so much time trying to come up with a good idea for the story. If I were to have a future project like this I would also probably make sure to read over the rubric again, since I forgot about some minor things in the final result of the project. In the past we had learned about physical and chemical changes. Though it was a while ago and a lot of the concepts we had learned had been forgotten by most of the students during this project. We got re-familiarized with the concepts we previously learned and got to apply that knowledge in this project. We also learned new aspects of physical and chemical changes because of this project. For the future, we will probably apply knowledge of physical and chemical changes since it is one of the basics in both regular science and chemistry. I can also apply what I learned about time management from this project to other project and aspects of my everyday life. 21st Century Skill: Self-Directional Skills Because I thought that Thinking and Problem Solving Skills fitted best for my first work sample I thought that Self-Directional Skills fitted best for this project. In class, students were given a decent amount of time to work on the project. But we weren't given enough time to complete the entire project. So we had to take work home with us and work on it more and even finish the project at home on our own time. Since I spent most of the class time we were given to focus on finding a good story I had to focus on the actual project when I was at home. When I finally sat down to work on the project at home, I realized that I should've worked on it more in class since I was getting a bit stressed from it. But in the time I managed the remainder of my time well and I was able to complete the project before it was due. I was also proud of the result from this project which made my use of time and effort more enjoyable in the end. From this project I got to use this skill more and I was reminded of why I should be using the skill more in general. |
