Geological Story Presentation
Field Ecology With Ms.Cassie Kepler
Description of Work/Assignment:
Students were tasked with choosing a period, era, or time in earth’s ecological history and creating a slideshow presentation on the time period they chose. For my presentation, I chose the Mesozoic Era to cover. In the presentation, students discussed when the time period they chose, what the time period was, and significant things that happened during the time period.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I feel that this assignment represented the 21st-century skill of global awareness. This 21st-century skill is about understanding different cultures and countries based on current actions and past history. Because of that, I feel that this assignment is a good example of global awareness. We had to research and learn about different time periods in earth's history to understand how things came to be. Although this skill was used more ecologically than culturally, I still think that it represents the 21st-century skill of global awareness well.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
From this assignment, I am most proud of my 8th slide in the presentation. On that slide, I made a timeline for the significant events that happened in my time period. It took a bit of time and definitely added to the final presentation. That particular slide had good graphics and was organized well; I really just loved it because it displayed my information well and in a way that was aesthetically pleasing.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I was able to improve my global awareness skill because I was able to learn about important events in earth’s history as well as learn to understand why some modern species exist. From this assignment, I was also able to apply this 21st-century skill more scientifically.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult aspect of this assignment was finding ways and ideas to keep my presentation interesting. I also found it a bit difficult to find specific information on my time period. The time period I was covering(the Mesozoic Era) was a very broad topic, so it was challenging to find information for the entire period. Additionally, many of my sources presented the same information, so I had to make sure I didn’t miss anything when researching the topic.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I were to start over and do this assignment again, I would spend more time researching. I spent a lot of time researching, and I got more than enough information for the topic, but I also spent an unnecessary amount of time trying to find and choose the perfect format for the final presentation. I didn’t have to spend as much time as I did trying to find a good presentation template, so if I did the assignment again, I’d spend more time researching rather than looking for a slideshow template.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
In the past, I’ve heard of the Mesozoic Era and different eras in earth's history, but I never learned about them in depth. I could relate some terms I already knew about the time periods and learned a lot more about each time period covered in the presentations.
How can you apply this to future learning?
We hear about time periods in earth's history, and I will probably learn about them again or at least mention them in the future. So I can use what I learned for those situations in the future if those topics are brought up.
