Writing Assignment 3
Interpersonal Communication With Whitney Hashimoto
Description of Work/Assignment:
Students had to read Chapter 3 from our textbooks, look at an informational slideshow, and then answer some questions based on each resource. This assignment focused on self-concept and how that affects our perception of others and our perception of situations. For this assignment, we had to answer some questions about ourselves and then answer questions based on topics from our textbook.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addressed 21st-century skill of interpersonal skills. This assignment made students think about and learn about their self-concept and how it affects their interactions and/or interpersonal skills. In this assignment, we additionally did a group forum and had to have a mediated discussion about our self-concept. I also had to discuss some real-life interactions I’ve had for this assignment, so I think interpersonal skills work pretty well.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
From the assignment, I think I am most proud of section 1, part 2 of this assignment. We had to personify a box and describe ourselves as the box. I gave a lot of detail and got good feedback from my instructor. I spent a lot of time on this section, and I wanted to give a lot of detail since we had to describe the box and give a description of what the box looks like and what attributes the box would have. I was able to describe it pretty well, and I was proud of that.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
Usually, I use face-to-face communication if I want to express emotions and views. Since this class is online, I need to use mediated communication in order to express everything. So I am able to improve my interpersonal skills by using a more formal form of communication that I’m not as used to.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult thing about this assignment was breaking down my self-concept. It was interesting learning how my self-concept might affect my views of situations and even my view of other people. I had never really thought about my self-concept before, so answering questions and trying to complete the assignment based on that was pretty difficult.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I were to do this assignment again, I probably would’ve written less. I went into a lot of detail in places where it just wasn’t needed in the assignment. Sometimes less is more, and I think that applies to this assignment in some ways.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
In the past, we’ve had to write autobiographies and discuss ourselves; I had to do the same thing for this assignment but in a different and elevated way. I could also touch on concepts about myself that I’ve covered before.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I will probably have to talk about myself in the future, either in school or in life. It was good to view myself differently and learn more about my self-concept and how that affects my perception. I can also apply what I’ve learned about interpersonal communication for future writing assignments and future classes I plan to take online. I learned more about mediated communication, so I’ll definitely be able to use that knowledge in the future.
